J.L. Booker

Retired Major J.L. Booker was appointed to the Atlanta Citizen Review Board by Lisa M. Borders, President of the Atlanta City Council on May 21, 2007 for a three (3) year term.

As a retired law enforcement professional, Major Booker has thirty three (33) years of extensive experience in security and public safety. His credentials have assisted the Board in organizing as a newly created board.

Major Booker’s extensive law enforcement career begun in 1953 as a store detective at Robinson’s Department store. He later joined Rich’s Department Store as the first black detective in the South. He has also served as Robinson’s Heights Homeowners Association President and coordinator of Security for Piccadilly restaurants. He joined the City of College Park Police Department in 1964 as a Patrol Officer. During his distinguished career, he received numerous awards and proclamations for esteemed performance in the line of duty. Such accolades extended beyond College Park Police Department to the City of Atlanta and Fulton County. In 1997, he was distinguished as being the longest continuous serving African American Law Enforcement Official in the State of Georgia.

Aside from vast professional achievements, Major Booker also received various civic accomplishments such as the Visionary Award from Covenant Ministries; the Living Legacy and Fifty Year Service Award from Wheat Street Baptist Church. Other affiliations are, but not limited to the following: National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives, Southern States Police Benevolent Association, Fraternal Order of Police, College Park Police Pipe & Drum Band Corp. Today, Major Booker is CEO of J.L. Booker Security & Consulting Association.

Major Booker is married with children, a native of Atlanta and a veteran of the United States Army.
